l am considering buying and using a small motorbike for myself,at the grand age of 39.Would like to know what laws exist at the moment as far as tests and what l need to do before l can legally be let loose on the public highways!!!

In texas l know you have to have a license with a Class M endorsement. Which means motorcycle/moped. Other states, l am not sure how they work. But most l would thing require motorcycle specific training and testing.

In some states, both a road test (either done by ur local DMV or a DOT/state-approved course) & visit to the DMV for a computerized test r required.

Regardless of if ur state law requires them, u should take a full DOT road training course.

On my first three days of riding on public roads l had 2 people do u-turns in front of me, 2 people cut into the road across multiple lanes without looking, & 2 instances where l had to use rapid braking to avoid running a stop light (being caught by cameras). l have not crashed but have had to use virtually every skill l learned to avoid problems within my first few days of riding.

It really is true.even when u put yourself in visible positions in a lane & keep a huge space cushion, many drivers (particularly those on cell phone) wo not see you.

The state-approved course (usually two days long) really is essential for u to practice the skills (especially stopping, brake/throttle handling in turns to avoid skidding to a fall, & swerving) u need to stay alive. 50% of accidents happen to motorcyclists within the first 5 months of riding.because most of them have not been fully trained.

No matter how great & careful car driver u are, & even when u r older & more patient.motorcycling is still a whole other level.

More than likely, if you already have a valid drivers license, if you are looking at a 49cc scooter or less then you already have all you need. Most cities dont require a motorcycle license or registration for anything under 50cc. If it is over that, then you will need a motorcycle license and registration and insurance.
