My first road-legal bike was a Honda C50 (Cub) - bad idea! l very quickly moved to a ''real'' bike with a clutch and manual gearbox; even if it was only a Honda S90, it taught me how to ride a ''proper'' motorcycle. I'd recommend something like that, but probably at least a 125.

First road bike.. CB175 Honda followed by..185 Suzuki> 350 RD Yamaha>Kawasaki 500 Triple>750 D2 Yamaha> RD250LC Yamaha> 750 CB honda>Bennelli 250>RD250LC Yamaha>Suzuki LS650 Savage>FJ1100 Yamaha.. & quite a few more that Ive forgotten.

l would recomend any of the Jap 250cc bikes as learners..

but if your like most & want something bigger.. go for the single or twin cylinder Jap bikes up to 650cc

1955 KHR Harley,
flat head sportster, 900cc., Before they were sportsters, bought it as a basket case. road it all over the western usa. It was fun because almost no one had ever seen one before.

A 5hp Totegoat. Tough little trail bike with no shocks. At age 10 l was king of the world riding it on mountain trails.

At age 15 l had saved and bought a Triumph Bonneville 650. Great beginner bike then and a great one now. Classic without being overly expensive or pretentious.

BSA 441 Shooting Star. It was a big British single with a four speed transmission and the shifter and rear brake pedals reversed from today is practise.
l had ridden/owned many ''better'' bikes since, but a few years ago l found another '441' and had it rebuilt. It is now my only motorcycle.

Bridgestone 90cc single-cylinder, two-stroke! Ran about 60 mph topped out, with its 4-speed box. Had to mix fuel, as it did not have oil injection. Moved to a Honda ''Dream'' 300 (nightmare) and then to a 62 Harley panhead.

l recommend a Ninja 250 after an MSF course.

l had a Buell Blast. l was happy with it at the time, but looking back I'd have been happier with a used bike instead of a brand-new beginner bike. Too much $$$, very underpowered. Motorcycle magazines call it the B- last.
If you want a rocket, check out the used Ninja 250's, 500 is maybe the 650.
If you want a cruiser, a Honda 600cc Shadow or a Harley Sportster.
