Riding the clutch is not something most people consider a good thing.

It means to ride with the clutch partially pulled in or disengaged. This will damage the clutch over time.

l can also describe the practice of letting the clutch out very slow. This may have a purpose on other than normal street driving such as off road or racing.

When starting out on a steep hill with a bike u might let the clutch out slower than normal or rev the engine a bit higher than normal & this could be called slipping the clutch or maybe some would call it riding the clutch.

Have u ever seen a person driving a manual transmission car with their foot resting on the clutch all the time? This is the perfect example of someone riding the clutch. This is fairly common with new drivers learning to use a clutch. This can wear out the throw-out bearing on a car & also ruin the clutch.

Generally u want to start on a nice flat surface. The bike should be in neutral, u will need to kick start it to get it running. Depending on the bike size & it is reliability this could be a strenuous step. So the bike is started & u r on flat ground, pull in the left lever on the handle bars, this is the clutch. Compress it fully to the grip, u now have the ability to switch gears. Push the shifter down (towards the floor) & u will now have just engaged first gear. Now, until u let off of the clutch lever u will not move. l can not stress the next part enough. You do not want to rev the bike out, gradually twist the throttle & slowly come off of the left clutch lever.You will start to feel yourself moving, keep ur feet a few inches above the ground so that u can catch yourself if u r unfamiliar with balancing.

Now repeat the next steps for the next 4 or 5 gears & u should be good. l just can not stress how much u should not drop the clutch, the first time l got on a dirt bike l did this & u would not believe how fast they come out from under you.
