do you check the oil on a harley touring bike standing strait up or on its side

l would check your owners manual. My Dyna has specific instructions for checking its oil levels in regards to temperature and position. If you do not have an owners manual you really should have one, especially on trips they come in handy.

l have an 04 Electra Glide. According to the manual, you check the oil with the bike on it is jiffy stand. You do not need to stand it up straight.

the way Harleys use oil, if l owned a Harley l would hook up a quart of oil like a '' I-V''

look on the ground under it.If the ground is dry its out of oil!

On the twin cam models, you check the fluids while the bike is at normal operating temperature, on a level surface, and on the side stand. Not sure about the evos and before. l never owned one.

If it does not have a center stand then it is designed to have the oil checked while on the jiffy stand.

Motor oil can be checked while on its kickstand. Jiffystand according to the motor company. Weird name for a kickstand. Proof that the Motor Company can not always ingratiate its language into the mainstream public.

l was told by my Local dealer never check the oil while its on the Stand, Always in the uprite position, otherwise you will get a false reading.
mine is a 92 Electra Glide.
Still wouldnt hurt to check with your Local Dealer, Harley Dealer that is.

Bryon is right, l have an 05 FLHP l and you check the oil when its warmed up and on the kick stand.

l think the newer models have a line on the dip stick for both positions, but l am not 100% sure.
