I'd like to know the rough cost to do a piston and rings service on a Cagiva Mito 125 2001 model, Im looking at buying one and would like to know prices before l get it.

Hi, all depends on what piston & rings u use, ie brand & country manufacturer. ie. Japanese parts will be dearer than taiwanese parts. BUT u get what u pay for - go Japanese.

Ok, the price all depends on the state of the top end once the head is removed. If its just the piston & rings then u r looking at £100- £140 for a decent piston, rings & head gasket.

Most probable though being a Mito Evo 2 the barrel will be scored to hell & a nice big gouge out on the transfer port.

So u will need to get the barrel replated as well. A replate will be £80 if u remove the top end yourself & send it off. If in UK use Stan Stephens for the replate as they offer a good postal service.

Or have a look on ebay u may find a decent 2nd hand top end. The original Mito (eddie lawson replica type) has the same top end as the evolution 1 & 2.

Buy the piston kit, head gasket & when the barrel comes back just whack it on yourself its pretty straight foward with a manual. Definately get a manual so u can make sure u set up the oil line & oil pump once done to avoid 2 stroke oil starvation. You should check this is working sweet anyway due to the seizure.

If u wanted a bike shop to do it all for you, & u just dropped off the bike u will be looking at about £350 but some places can quote up to £500-£600.

Just make sure u run it in properly after as the mito barrel is nicosil plated & will nip up again very quickly if not properly lubricated.(will need synthetic oil only if nicosil replate, u can use mineral if needed but u cant mix them so choose one or the other. Syn is recommended for so many other reasons)

We also set the oil pump slightly richer for the first 100Miles so the run in can be a little harder to bed the rings properly.

The biggest bonus with using a reputable shop is the warranty on the work.
