Ive done all the maintnence myself on my bike up tilnow, l havent broken into the engine yet.. But l really wanna attempt this myself, Im ordering the service manual, but l was just curious whats involved in checking the valve clearance. Is this something a novice mechanic can do himself, so far l have added slip on exhaust, changed the oil, added a fender eliminator, changed the air filter, replaced the coolant, and had all the fairings off the bike, the main reason l wanna do myself is because l dont trust mechanics, They could charge me to this job and never do it, and l would never know until a valve burns out. l was thinking that l could check the clearance on the valves and if one needs adjustment then l could take it to them to have it shimmed , any help would be appreciated.

Since its a fairly newer bike would suggest watching a professional do it then the next time you could attempt it but l personally would not attempt it because its a sweet bike and l wouldnt want to wreck it

If the engine is not running smoothly or the valves are getting noisy, then you might want to check the valves.Otherwise l would not recommend messing with them. Valves are not going to burn because of valve clearances. On a bike like 600RR the head has to be tested on a flow bench while performing the valve adjustment to get the maximum possible power output.
